Kokiri Tui
Acrylic on canvas round
60cm in diameter
“Kōkiri Tui”, means “Bold Tui” in Māori.
My painting is a vibrant, contemporary portrayal of my favourite bird the tui, a native bird of New Zealand known for its iridescent plumage and melodic song.
The tui’s shimmering blue, green, and bronze feathers are meticulously detailed, with special attention given to its signature throat tufts.
With the geometric background I incorporated bold angular shapes in teal, green, black, and yellow, to add a modern, abstract contrast to the organic beauty of the bird. The lush harakeke (flax) leaves in the foreground anchor the tui in its natural environment.
This piece beautifully celebrates both the tui’s elegance and the vibrancy of Aotearoa’s landscapes.
